Council tax warning issued to 800,000 households that have ‘overpaid’
Hundreds of thousands of households could be missing out on money they are entitled to after overpaying their council tax. More than £141million is owed to 808,000 households across England, Scotland and Wales, according to research by MoneySavingExpert (MSE), which gathered information from 349 local authority areas under Freedom of Information laws. Some households could be due £100 or more, especially if they have moved home and left money sitting in an old council tax account.

TL;DR
- Over £141 million is due to 808,000 households in England, Scotland, and Wales due to council tax overpayments.
- Overpayments can occur if payments continue after moving, or if a property's council tax band is successfully lowered.
- Households owed money might receive £100 or more.
- To check for a refund, review final bills from previous addresses, check online council accounts, or search for "council tax refund" plus the former council's name.
- Some councils may use credit balances to offset other council tax debts rather than issuing a direct refund.
