Left-wing says Hubbard release risks rewarding Putin without moving Ukraine peace talks

Russia freed American Stephen Hubbard during Steve Witkoff’s talks with Vladimir Putin, giving Donald Trump a diplomatic success while critics question whether Washington’s warmer approach to Moscow advances peace in Ukraine.

Russia’s release of American former teacher Stephen Hubbard coincided with US envoy Steve Witkoff’s meeting with Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg, intertwining a humanitarian outcome with fraught negotiations over the war in Ukraine.

Trump presented Hubbard’s return as the result of a personal request to Putin and stressed that Washington had offered no reciprocal concession. “There was no ‘swap’ necessary for this release,” Trump said, calling it an unprecedented outcome and saying Hubbard was heading home to his family. Hubbard, 74, had been sentenced in 2024 to nearly seven years in a Russian penal colony on allegations that he fought for Ukraine; he denied involvement in combat.

Witkoff’s approach underscored the more conciliatory tone. He praised Putin for the release, telling him: “You are a humanitarian also, sir, and I salute that.” The two sides also discussed proposed routes toward a peace process, economic cooperation and a deal allowing Russian diesel exports to the US.

But the reported diplomatic warmth contrasts with Kyiv’s demand for concrete steps to halt the fighting. Witkoff said talks in Oslo with Ukrainian and European leaders had created “a foundation in place to move toward a ceasefire,” while Kremlin officials maintained that progress depended on Ukraine making unspecified decisions.

Critics of Trump’s Russia policy argue that the prisoner release and revived commercial ties give Moscow political benefits while Russia continues its military campaign and holds to far-reaching territorial demands. Supporters of engagement can point to Hubbard’s freedom and renewed contact; skeptics note that neither side announced a ceasefire or a substantive breakthrough in St Petersburg.
