Omar home search fuels clash over inquiry and political targeting

Federal agents searched Representative Ilhan Omar’s Washington-area home under a judicial warrant, but the operation has prompted competing accounts: an unspecified criminal inquiry on one side and allegations of political retaliation on the other.

Federal agents’ search of Representative Ilhan Omar’s Washington-area home has left the central question unanswered: what is the investigation about, and was the action insulated from the political campaign surrounding her?

The Justice Department said Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized warrant in the Washington area as part of an ongoing federal investigation, without disclosing the alleged conduct or scope of the case. A department spokesperson described it as an “ongoing federal investigation.”

Reporting citing unnamed sources close to the inquiry said the search concerned possible fraud involving Omar’s immigration paperwork, which her late father completed when she was a child. Those allegations sit alongside years of claims about Omar’s family and immigration history that she has consistently denied; the public record supplied with the search has not detailed the basis for the warrant.

Omar casts the search in sharply different terms. She said it was an effort to “target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement,” linking it to what she called a decade of baseless attacks and adding: “I will not be silenced.”

Democratic leaders likewise focused on the timing — less than a month before the midterm election — and on President Donald Trump’s past statements about Omar. House Democratic leaders said the search was “deeply disturbing” and raised questions about “the continued corrupt weaponization of the federal government against the president’s adversaries.”

The two accounts agree that agents acted under a warrant secured by the Justice Department. They diverge over what that legal authorization signifies: officials present it as evidence of a continuing criminal process, while Omar and her allies say the surrounding political rhetoric makes independent scrutiny essential.
