Family’s privacy plea clashes with Trump’s tiger-attack post
William Chapman’s family has asked people to stop circulating distressing material as investigators examine his death at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Coverage differs chiefly over Donald Trump’s decision to share footage of the attack online.
The death of William Chapman after he entered a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park has prompted both a formal safety inquiry and a plea from his family to stop the online circulation of footage from the incident.
Chapman’s family described the 23-year-old as a “bright, warm and engaging young man” and said he had experienced significant mental illness for several years. They said it would be for the coroner to determine whether that history played any role in his death, while asking the public to respect the process.1
Their most immediate concern is the sharing of material connected to the attack. The family said publication and circulation of “deeply offensive media content” was causing severe distress while they were trying to come to terms with their loss.2 South Yorkshire Police is supporting the family, while City of Doncaster Council has opened a health-and-safety investigation; the park remained closed after the incident.3
Across the coverage, there is little dispute over the central facts: Chapman entered the enclosure while visiting the park alone, was attacked by Altai, an Amur tiger, and died at the scene. The park has said the tiger is safe and will not be euthanised.3
The main divergence concerns Donald Trump’s response. Reports across the political spectrum say the US president shared a clip of the attack on Truth Social with the message, “Don’t ever mess with nature!”4 Right-leaning coverage largely presented the post alongside the investigation and the family’s statement. Left-leaning coverage placed greater emphasis on the conflict between sharing the footage and the family’s explicit request for privacy, declining to reproduce the video because of its content.5
That contrast leaves the official inquiry and the family’s request at the centre of the story: questions about why Chapman entered the enclosure remain unresolved, while the consequences of publicising the footage continue to trouble those closest to him.
