Mbappé’s late double cuts Barcelona’s lead in a tense Clásico.

Real Madrid’s 2-1 win at Camp Nou halted Barcelona’s unbeaten league run and narrowed the gap at the top to three points. The teams agreed it was a tightly contested match, but differed over whether Madrid’s control or Barcelona’s fatigue proved decisive.

Real Madrid turned a match Barcelona had repeatedly pulled back into into a defining late victory, winning 2-1 at Camp Nou through Kylian Mbappé’s second goal. The result ended Barcelona’s nine-game unbeaten domestic run and reduced their lead over Madrid to three points.

The two sides offered different explanations for a contest that swung between Barcelona pressure and Madrid counterattacks. Barcelona had more of the ball and found an equaliser through Raphinha after Mbappé’s first-half opener, but Madrid repeatedly found space behind the home side’s advanced defensive line. A live account described Barcelona as “absolutely wide open” during one first-half break, while noting that Raphinha’s goal brought the hosts level.

Madrid manager José Mourinho presented the outcome as the product of a team focused on the wider championship rather than merely a high-profile derby. “Real Madrid do not play to win at the Camp Nou, Real Madrid play to win La Liga,” he said, adding that his side had won “with calmness and with all merit.” He also praised the blend in midfield, arguing it gave Madrid defensive balance as well as quality in attack.

That view was reinforced by accounts of the decisive move: Jude Bellingham’s skill released Eduardo Camavinga, whose pull-back allowed Mbappé to finish with only minutes remaining. Mourinho called it a match in which “two teams … played to win,” portraying the late strike as the climax of an open, intense contest.

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick did not challenge Madrid’s merit, but focused on his own side’s physical condition. “We missed the freshness,” he said, arguing that small details in major matches had gone against his players and that they must recover and respond.

A contrasting, Madrid-centred account highlighted the visitors’ approach to limiting Lamine Yamal’s influence and framed Mbappé’s two goals as the performance that kept Real firmly in the title race. Barcelona remain top, but the margin is narrower and the momentum has shifted.
