Right-wing says Bottas must deliver as Cadillac weighs American future
Cadillac’s interest in an American Formula One driver is intensifying pressure on Valtteri Bottas, while Frederik Vesti also presents a credible internal alternative. Reports differ over whether Colton Herta has already secured the superlicence needed to race.
Valtteri Bottas faces a sharper fight to retain his Cadillac drive after the team signalled that consistent results—not his record alone—will determine its 2027 plans. The central tension is between retaining an experienced race winner and pursuing a driver who could strengthen Cadillac’s American identity.
Cadillac team principal Marcin Budkowski said Bottas must repeat his stronger weekends more regularly. “That’s what he needs to do, race in, race out,” Budkowski said, pointing to occasions when the Finn had matched or outpaced team-mate Sergio Perez.1 That assessment leaves Bottas with a clear route to stability, but also confirms that the seat remains under review.
Colton Herta is presented as the leading alternative because Cadillac has long sought an American driver. Budkowski called that ambition “important,” saying an American on the grid would build interest, while stressing that the decision also depends on “the timing, the driver, whether the team is ready for it.”1
The reports differ on Herta’s immediate eligibility. One account says his Mexico City practice mileage delivered the final superlicence point needed for Formula One, intensifying pressure on Bottas.1 Others say an FIA reassessment left Herta one point short after Cadillac had miscalculated his tally, meaning another practice appearance may be required.2 Herta nonetheless made his ambition plain: “I want to be in Formula One – that’s the goal.”3
Vesti offers a contrasting case: less F1 race experience than Bottas, but ties to both Mercedes and Cadillac through his reserve and IMSA roles. After a strong Mexico practice outing, the Dane said, “There’s no doubt I’ve got my eyes on that seat.”2 Cadillac, then, appears to be balancing Bottas’s need to prove form against Herta’s commercial appeal and Vesti’s potential.
