Right-wing says Cliff Richard marks 86th birthday by giving fans a first listen at new album
Cliff Richard used his 86th birthday celebrations to thank fans and preview Only Number Ones, while a separate celebration showed the singer toasting the occasion with friends, cake and wine.
Cliff Richard has paired an 86th-birthday celebration with a new musical project, using a London fan event to unveil details of Only Number Ones while also sharing a quieter account of celebrating the day with friends.
At the InterContinental Hotel on Park Lane, fans who had pre-ordered the forthcoming album were invited to afternoon tea and heard selected tracks, including Richard’s versions of George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord” and Roy Orbison’s “Oh, Pretty Woman.” The album, due for release on November 27, revisits chart-topping songs from across eight decades.1
Richard framed the record as an acknowledgement of the audience behind his long career. “They have always been very special to me and are the reason why I continue to make music and tour,” he said. “They helped me all of these years to get to number one, and it is great that I am now able to give back with my own versions of number one tracks that I personally love.”1
That public, career-focused celebration contrasts with images shared from his birthday itself. In photographs posted to Instagram, Richard wore a snake-print jacket, raised a glass of wine and cut a frosted cake. He thanked followers for their messages, writing: “I had a lovely day and celebrated with friends (& cake!).”2
The two accounts underline different sides of the occasion: one centred on fans and a commercial release, the other on a personal milestone. Both stress continuity for the singer, whose new album includes classic hits such as “Spirit in the Sky,” “I’m a Believer” and “White Christmas,” alongside a deluxe selection of his own UK number ones.1
Richard has also continued his annual calendar tradition, describing the 2027 edition as a collection of travel and time spent with friends. “The pictures in the 2027 calendar are a small snapshot of some wonderful times,” he said.2
