Ngumoha’s flair lifts Liverpool, but early flaws remain exposed
Liverpool recovered from 2-0 down to beat Villarreal 4-3, with Alexis Mac Allister’s double and Rio Ngumoha’s two assists driving the turnaround. Coverage agreed on the teenager’s impact but differed over whether the result masked wider concerns.
Liverpool turned a damaging first-half deficit into a 4-3 Champions League win over Villarreal, but the dramatic result carried two competing messages: a breakout night for Rio Ngumoha and another warning over the side’s defensive fragility.
One account portrayed the opening half-hour as close to a humiliation, arguing that Liverpool’s senior players were “mostly hopeless” while the 18-year-old winger took responsibility for the recovery.1 Villarreal led through Georges Mikautadze and Sergi Cardona after a succession of errors, including a difficult evening for Virgil van Dijk.
Ngumoha did not score, but his influence shaped the reversal. He created Ronald Araújo’s equaliser before setting up Alexis Mac Allister’s second goal, as Liverpool moved from 2-0 down to 3-2. The teenager said the display ranked “up there with one of the best [games] I’ve played,” adding that he trusted himself in one-on-one situations.2 Florian Wirtz then made it 4-2 before Tani Oluwaseyi’s late goal gave Villarreal a final chance.
The emphasis on Ngumoha’s individual spark was shared across the coverage, but not at the expense of the collective response. Another account described Liverpool as “driven by Alexis Mac Allister and ignited by Rio Ngumoha,” crediting Mac Allister’s two goals and the hosts’ much stronger second half.3
Iraola’s assessment offered the more cautious view. He praised Ngumoha’s willingness to improve and growing comfort on the right wing, but stressed that the player is “only 18 and still not the full package.”2 That qualification also fits Liverpool’s wider performance: a perfect Champions League record survived, yet only after a gifted young winger helped rescue a disjointed start.
