England U15s walk off as FIFA investigates alleged racist slur
England’s Under-15 side left the field against the Republic of Ireland after a player reported alleged racist abuse. FIFA is gathering reports, while accounts differ mainly over the disputed allegation and the timing of the stoppage.
England’s Under-15 match against the Republic of Ireland in Azerbaijan was abandoned after England declined to continue following an allegation of racist abuse. The case has moved to FIFA, which says it is collecting official reports before referring the matter to its independent disciplinary committee.
Accounts from across the coverage agree on the central sequence: after an on-field altercation, an England player went to the touchline to speak to staff, who raised the complaint with the referee. England coach Matt Thorpe then withdrew his team while Ireland were leading 4-1.1
The allegation was not accepted without dispute. One report said an Irish backroom staff member responded, “No, he didn’t,” as the England player protested, triggering an exchange between the benches.2 Another account said the complaint followed a confrontation between players and that England staff told the referee they were “reporting racism” and did not want to continue.3
FIFA has not confirmed the substance of the allegation. Its statement described an “incident” at the Under-15 World Cup and Festival, saying the referee abandoned the match after England’s refusal to continue and that the disciplinary committee would decide the matter “in due course.”4
The differing reports largely concern the precise circumstances around the allegation, rather than the match’s outcome: England left the pitch, Ireland had been ahead, and the governing body is investigating. The Football Association said it was awaiting further information and stressed that players’ wellbeing was a priority, while the Football Association of Ireland had not issued a public statement in the reports provided.3
