Right-wing says Shirley Ballas’s US guest role stirs Strictly exit fears

Shirley Ballas’s guest appearance on Dancing With the Stars has revived speculation about her Strictly Come Dancing future, although she says she remains fully committed to the BBC show.

Shirley Ballas’s guest-judge appearance on the US version of Strictly has prompted fresh questions about her future on the BBC programme. But the head judge has sought to draw a clear line between a transatlantic opportunity and any plan to leave her longstanding role.

Ballas travelled to Los Angeles to judge the Halloween edition of Dancing With the Stars, then returned to Britain for Strictly’s own Halloween weekend. She described the US role as “a job I’ve always wanted” and said it had long been on her wish list, while insisting: “I’m 100 percent not leaving Strictly!”

Her scoring in the US gave both sides of the debate material. Ballas issued low marks to Julia Stiles and Tatyana Ali, awarded her son Mark Ballas and partner Maura Higgins a seven while other judges gave eights and nines, and gave Harry Shum Jr and Jenna Johnson a 10 in a perfect-score performance. Supporters could view that as evidence of the tougher judging style she had flagged; critics may see the high-profile assignment as a sign that her ambitions extend beyond the BBC ballroom.

A second report says some unnamed figures behind the scenes believe the arrangement could alter the panel’s dynamic and raise expectations that other judges receive similar flexibility. One source described a divide between people who accept Ballas’s assurance and those who think she wants “bigger and better things in the States.”

That speculation sits alongside a contrary assessment from sources who say Ballas remains central to the programme and has no immediate intention of stepping away. The dual-show workload has precedent: Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli both worked on the British and American versions, though Tonioli later cited the demands of repeated transatlantic travel when he left Strictly.

For now, the available accounts agree on the immediate point: Ballas’s US stint is a guest role, while her stated position is that she will continue on Strictly. The disagreement is over whether the appearance is simply double duty—or an early signal of a longer-term shift.
