Arsenal End Anfield Drought as Liverpool’s Misses Prove Costly

Kai Havertz’s early goal gave Arsenal their first league win at Anfield since 2012. Accounts agree Liverpool applied sustained pressure, but differ on whether Arsenal’s defensive resolve or Liverpool’s costly mistakes best explains the result.

Arsenal turned one early opening into a significant Anfield win, while Liverpool were left to reflect on a familiar frustration in tight matches: territorial pressure without the decisive final touch. Kai Havertz’s close-range finish secured a 1-0 result and Arsenal’s first league victory at Liverpool since 2012.

The Arsenal-focused account emphasised the visitors’ fast start. Alisson Becker’s misplaced pass gave Arsenal possession high up the pitch; Noni Madueke released Declan Rice, whose low cross found Havertz to score. It presented the winner as evidence of Arsenal’s ability to seize a moment, with Havertz responding effectively after returning to the starting side.

Liverpool-focused coverage, by contrast, treated the goal primarily as the consequence of a damaging individual mistake. It described Alisson’s pass as one that “gave the ball away for Arsenal’s early goal,” while arguing that Liverpool responded strongly enough to feel aggrieved by the outcome.

There was broad agreement on what followed. Liverpool increased the pressure, with Florian Wirtz striking the crossbar from a free-kick and Alexis Mac Allister missing a free header. Coverage also noted Liverpool’s view that Alexander Isak had been pulled back in the area without a penalty being awarded.

The difference lies in emphasis rather than the basic sequence of events. Arsenal’s display was portrayed as resilient: after absorbing a sustained spell of attacks, the visitors defended their lead with Rice central both to the move for the goal and to key defensive interventions. Liverpool’s account accepted Arsenal defended well, but stressed that the home side created enough moments—and made too many errors—to have changed the result.
