Right-wing says high rents and weak sales are pushing Typo out of the UK

Typo plans to close all of its UK stores and website by early 2027, citing rents, operating costs and softer sales. The retailer’s departure adds to a wider run of high-street closures, though its other international operations will continue.

Typo is preparing to leave the UK retail market entirely by early 2027, closing its remaining shops and British website after concluding that the operation cannot continue on its current footing.

The stationery and gifting chain, owned by Australia’s Cotton On Group, operates about 13 UK sites, including locations in London, Canterbury and the North East. Its Newcastle Eldon Square branch has already shut after a clearance sale, while dates for the other closures have not yet been confirmed.

In its statement, the company said: “After careful consideration we are closing Typo’s operations in the United Kingdom, with all stores and online trading to close by early 2027.” It also acknowledged the consequences for workers, saying its priority was “to support our people through this transition.”

The central explanation offered by Typo is financial rather than a change to the brand’s wider strategy. It said that “ongoing high rent and operating costs, combined with softer sales, mean there is no sustainable path today for Typo in the UK.” The group will continue trading internationally, while its Cotton On, Cotton On Body and Cotton On Kids brands are expected to keep serving British customers through online and wholesale channels.

The closure is being presented alongside other recent reductions in Britain’s physical retail estate, including planned store closures by Wynsors World of Shoes and TG Jones, as well as the shutdown of Claire’s Accessories’ standalone sites. The comparison points to a broader high-street challenge, although Typo’s stated decision rests specifically on the balance between its UK costs and sales.
