Michael Palin postpones tour after bathroom fall leaves him with fractures
Michael Palin has canceled his Philippines book tour and other appearances for the coming months after a fall at home fractured three ribs and his pelvis. Reports across the political spectrum focused on his recovery, apology to fans and thanks to the NHS.
Michael Palin has postponed his forthcoming UK book tour and other engagements after a fall in his home bathroom left him with three fractured ribs and a minor pelvic fracture. The 83-year-old Monty Python performer said recovery would take time and offered apologies to fans and tour staff.
Right-leaning coverage emphasised the disruption to the promotional run for Michael Palin – In the Philippines, which accompanies his Channel 5 travel series. Palin described the incident as “a slip in the family bathroom where I’ve walked for 58 years,” adding that he fell heavily on his left side.1 The report also highlighted his joke that it had been “a comedy fall with no audience there to see it,” and his intention to “stick to fish slapping dances from now on.”1
The left-leaning account similarly centred Palin’s own statement, stressing that he had been treated in hospital and would be out of action for several months. It reported his apology to those who had prepared the tour and his thanks to the NHS for its “incredible care.”2
Both accounts agree on the central facts: the injury was sustained at home, the tour cannot proceed as planned, and Palin expects a lengthy recovery. Neither frames the cancellation as permanent. A notice on his website said ticket holders would be contacted by their original point of purchase once further details and rescheduled dates were available.2
The tour had been due to draw on Palin’s travels across the Philippines, the subject of both his latest book and television programme. For now, the focus has shifted from the journey he documented to the recovery he says is necessary before returning to public events.
