Martinez apology closes the row, but not United’s recruitment debate

Lisandro Martinez has apologised and accepted a fine after criticising Manchester United’s recruitment, while reports differ over whether his underlying concerns about squad depth will fade as quickly as the dispute.

Lisandro Martinez’s apology has drawn a line under his immediate dispute with Manchester United’s leadership, but it has not erased the concerns that prompted him to speak after the defeat at Atletico Madrid. The defender now faces the familiar tension between demanding more from the club and protecting the players already in the squad.

Following the 2-0 loss, Martinez said he had expected greater investment and “more from our technical director” Jason Wilcox. After talks with manager Michael Carrick and club officials, he apologised and was fined; United regard the matter as closed, although a decision on the option to extend his contract has yet to be made.

Martinez’s own explanation focused on the setting rather than withdrawing his competitive ambition. “The frustration of the defeat led me to express how I felt at a time and place that perhaps were not the right ones,” he said, adding that his comments had not helped the club’s unity.

Reporting sympathetic to the substance of his complaint has linked the outburst to Ayden Heaven playing at left-back in Madrid amid injuries, portraying Martinez’s anger as a response to what he saw as insufficient defensive cover. That account stressed that the criticism was aimed at planning rather than at Heaven personally. Former United defender Gary Neville broadly agreed that more defenders should have been signed, but argued that a player should not publicly imply teammates are inadequate.

Other coverage has put greater weight on Martinez’s acknowledgement of players’ responsibility. Before the formal apology, he said the squad must “demand even more of ourselves,” while reports suggested teammates shared mixed views: some agreed with his concerns, others objected to the way they were aired.

That distinction now matters as Carrick prepares for Leeds. Martinez has reaffirmed his commitment to the team, while the club must show whether its call for unity can coexist with the defender’s demand for a stronger squad.
