William Uses Chat Show Debut to Put Earthshot in the Spotlight
Prince William mixed personal anecdotes with a pitch for the Earthshot Prize during a surprise appearance on The Graham Norton Show. Coverage differed in whether it highlighted the environmental initiative or the lighter moments from the interview.
Prince William’s first appearance on The Graham Norton Show combined the conventions of a celebrity chat with a more purposeful message: using a prime-time sofa to promote the Earthshot Prize ahead of its next awards ceremony in Mumbai.
Accounts of the programme agree that the Prince of Wales arrived as a surprise guest alongside Cate Blanchett, Robert Irwin and Hannah Waddingham, whose connections to Earthshot made the episode more than a standard entertainment booking. The initiative, founded by William in 2020, is intended to identify and support environmental innovators; the Mumbai ceremony is due to award £5 million in prize money.1
William’s central argument was that environmental campaigning should not be defined solely by bleak warnings. He said years of hearing about environmental problems had left him struck by “the negativity and doom,” and that Earthshot was conceived to bring “urgency and optimism together.” “It’s all about getting excited,” he said.1 Blanchett, an Earthshot council member, described the initiative as a “tapestry of solutions,” while Irwin pointed to its role in encouraging a new generation of environmental advocates.2
Other coverage put greater weight on the relaxed material that made the appearance distinctive. William said he had once considered becoming a police officer and later wanted to be a DJ, adopting the name “DJ Xara, with an X”; he conceded the plan “wasn’t good.”3
He also spoke about family viewing, saying Charlotte and Louis are “obsessed” with The Celebrity Traitors, and joked about testing Ross Kemp’s on-screen anxieties by touching him after the first episode. “Turns out he was really jumpy!”4
The two strands were complementary rather than competing: the lighter stories gave the interview its conversational tone, while the Earthshot discussion kept the focus on the environmental programme William was there to promote.
