Right-wing says Britt McHenry resigned after NBA confrontation
Reports say State Department press adviser Britt McHenry left her role after a confrontation at a Washington Wizards game. Accounts differ over whether she was removed from the arena or left voluntarily, and over how the incident began.
Britt McHenry reportedly resigned from a State Department press-adviser position shortly after a confrontation with spectators at the Washington Wizards’ season opener, though officials had not publicly confirmed the circumstances of her departure.
One account said McHenry’s exit came a day after she was elevated to lead external affairs and press work for Under Secretary Jacob Helberg’s team. It described footage showing her throwing a drink toward another spectator, after which arena staff escorted her from the seating area as fans booed and threw items in her direction. The report summarized the rapid reversal as “promoted and fired in 24 hours.”1
A second report similarly described the move as a forced resignation, while noting that the White House referred questions to the State Department and that the department had not responded. It said video showed McHenry throwing a drink and leaving her seat, but stressed accounts suggesting the dispute began after men seated behind her made derogatory comments about Bucks player Kyle Kuzma’s fiancée, Winnie Harlow.2
The two accounts broadly agree that the confrontation escalated inside Capital One Arena and that McHenry was met by hostile reactions as she left. They differ, however, on the degree to which her departure was involuntary. People close to McHenry said she left to go to a bar rather than being ejected, while footage was described as showing security accompanying her from the section.1
McHenry, a former ESPN journalist who had joined the administration in September, had publicly described her government appointment as an honour. The reports did not include a public statement from her addressing the alleged resignation or the game incident.2
