Donnarumma confrontation turns City’s Anfield win into another flashpoint
Gianluigi Donnarumma was led away after engaging with Liverpool supporters following Manchester City’s 3-0 win at Anfield. Reports agree the exchange reflected a broader hostile atmosphere around City’s financial-rule case, while differing on its intensity.
Manchester City’s 3-0 win at Liverpool ended with a fresh flashpoint when goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was led away from supporters near the Anfield tunnel. The incident shifted attention from City’s emphatic result to the hostility surrounding the club’s financial-rule case.
One account described Donnarumma as having a “heated war-of-words” with a Liverpool supporter after full-time, as chants of “cheat” were heard while he headed towards the dressing room.1 That report linked the anger in and around the stadium to the recent findings in City’s financial case, saying the atmosphere had been fuelled by concerns among rival supporters about sporting integrity.
Other coverage portrayed a more immediate escalation. One report said the goalkeeper returned from the tunnel to argue with a fan after being targeted by chants, before a staff member quickly escorted him away.2 It also noted that Liverpool supporters had booed City during the warm-up and throughout the match, while City’s travelling fans celebrated goals from Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki.
A third account similarly reported that Donnarumma moved closer to supporters as stewards and City personnel attempted to pull him back, characterising the footage as an angry confrontation rather than a prolonged physical incident.3 The reports therefore converge on the sequence — chants, an exchange and an intervention by staff — while differing on how sharply to describe Donnarumma’s reaction.
City manager Enzo Maresca focused instead on his team’s response to the wider atmosphere. “The noise will always be there so we need to learn how to deal with it,” he said, adding that City must “make our noise by winning games.”1 For City, the win was a show of resilience; for Liverpool supporters, the chants made clear that the club’s off-field case remains central to the rivalry.
