Martinez’s transfer broadside tests United’s fragile unity

Lisandro Martinez says Manchester United need greater investment and a stronger squad, while Wayne Rooney argues his public criticism risks unsettling teammates. Michael Carrick has urged the club to focus on moving forward after the Atlético Madrid defeat.

Manchester United’s 2-0 Champions League defeat at Atlético Madrid has become more than another damaging result: it has opened a public argument over whether the club’s biggest problem is its squad-building or its ability to remain united.

Martinez framed his criticism as a defence of Michael Carrick and a challenge to the hierarchy’s transfer strategy. He said United had created a foundation last season but now needed “more players to compete,” adding: “I expect more from our technical director.” The defender also accepted that players must improve, but argued a deeper squad was essential for nights of this scale.

His case rests on a distinction between blaming the coach and examining the wider structure. Martinez said Carrick “does his best” and warned against continually changing managers when other parts of the club should also be scrutinised. In that reading, the Atlético loss exposed a gap between United’s ambitions and their recruitment rather than solely a failure of the team selected.

Rooney broadly acknowledged the underlying concern, saying United need investment at both ends of the pitch. But he strongly disputed Martinez’s decision to raise it publicly after a defeat. Rooney said the remarks were “disrespectful” to teammates because they implied the existing group was not good enough, and warned that the episode would create “more noise” around a side already under pressure.

Ashley Young offered a similar balance: recruitment “has to be better,” he said, but the current players must still take responsibility for performances. Youri Tielemans, one of the summer arrivals, declined to comment on Martinez’s intervention.

Carrick has not endorsed either side outright. He described the comments as potentially shaped by the emotion of the match, said he needed more information before deciding whether action was warranted, and insisted he did not doubt the group’s togetherness. His immediate priority was to move quickly toward the next match against Leeds.
