Right-wing says civilian stopped Bend gunman after school doors were breached

Reports focus on the civilian who pursued and fatally shot the attacker at Silver Rail Elementary, while families and school officials face the loss of four people and investigators work to establish a motive.

The intervention that ended the shooting has become the central focus of reports from Bend, Oregon, even as the community mourns three children and a teacher killed at Silver Rail Elementary School.

Accounts agree that a 16-year-old armed with a pump-action shotgun fired through locked entry doors and entered the school shortly before 1 p.m. Police said the suspect was later found dead inside after a community member pursued him. The civilian’s identity was initially withheld, while the motive and the suspect’s connection to the school remained under investigation.

Several reports identify the civilian as Kaylub Giamanco, 36, a father of two pupils at the school. His brother told NBC News that Giamanco was driving home when he heard gunfire, saw the attacker heading toward the building and followed him inside after shots struck his pickup truck. The accounts frame that response as an effort that may have prevented further deaths, but also describe its emotional cost: Giamanco was reportedly struggling with guilt over those he could not save.

Teachers and officials offered a similar assessment of the intervention without the celebratory language. Fifth-grade teacher Kathy Sheil Smith said the person who acted showed courage: “That person saw something. They did something.” Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek thanked the community member, saying the action carried “a heavy emotional burden.”

For relatives, however, the focus remains on the victims. Kelik Summer, father of 5-year-old Rhoam Summer, wrote: “Today has been the worst day of my life. My son Rhoam was killed in a school shooting.” Superintendent Steven Cook described the attack as an “unthinkable tragedy,” telling families the district would remain with them.

The reports converge on the scale of the loss and the speed of the civilian response, while leaving investigators with unresolved questions about motive, warning signs and how the teenager obtained the weapon.
