Left-wing says Antonelli’s Austin pole puts first F1 title within reach

Kimi Antonelli beat Max Verstappen to pole at the United States Grand Prix, giving the Mercedes driver a clear path to clinch the championship on Sunday. He still needs a race win and rivals to finish outside key positions.

Kimi Antonelli has put himself at the front of the United States Grand Prix grid — and within sight of a first Formula One world title — after beating Max Verstappen in a closely fought Austin qualifying session.

The Mercedes driver set a 1:34.035 lap to take pole by 0.179 seconds from Verstappen, with Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar third. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton followed in fourth and fifth, while Antonelli’s Mercedes team-mate George Russell qualified sixth.

The two accounts agree that the result was a timely return to form for Antonelli, whose pole was his first since the Belgian Grand Prix in July and came after Ferrari had led each of the three practice sessions. Antonelli called the achievement unexpected, saying: “It was unexpected, we felt it would be close but it was a good surprise.”

Both reports frame Sunday as an opportunity rather than a certainty. Antonelli can secure the championship by winning, with Hamilton finishing lower than fourth and Russell outside the top eight. Hamilton already starts fifth, but Russell begins sixth, leaving the title calculation dependent on race-day performance.

Antonelli stressed that pole position does not remove the challenge from Verstappen and Red Bull. “We got pole so we will try to win tomorrow but Max has been very quick … so it is not going to be easy,” he said. Verstappen, meanwhile, attributed his deficit to a loss of balance and grip in the final qualifying segment: “No mistakes, just not enough grip. But if it’s still a P2, I take it.”

Mercedes can also take encouragement from the gap between Antonelli and Russell, and from signs its recent upgrades are beginning to deliver. Yet Ferrari’s practice speed and Verstappen’s race threat leave Antonelli with a decisive but far from straightforward Sunday ahead.
