Meghan’s letter renews questions over how police handled allegations
Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, says her estrangement from her father was driven by child-safety concerns, while Thomas Markle Sr denies allegations against him. As Philippine authorities examine material reportedly found at his former home, the Met is reviewing its 2019 response.
Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’s final letter to her estranged father has brought a long-running family rupture into contact with a wider official inquiry — and with renewed scrutiny of the Metropolitan Police’s handling of earlier allegations.
Reporting from right-leaning outlets has focused on the letter’s reported personal message: that Thomas Markle Sr would not meet Meghan’s children and should seek help. It also highlights Meghan’s concern that a 2019 letter received by the Met, containing allegations of offending outside Britain, was not passed to other law-enforcement agencies.1
The Met has said the letter was reviewed and shared with the office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, but that its contents were not shared elsewhere. The force is reviewing its handling of the matter and may refer itself to the police watchdog.2 Meghan’s spokesperson has acknowledged that she was mistaken by a few months when initially recalling whether she learned of the letter in 2018 or 2019.2
Left-leaning and public-service reporting has placed greater weight on the still-unresolved investigative process. Philippine officials are examining digital material reportedly found at Markle Sr’s former Cebu home after a report by his son, Thomas Markle Jr. The country’s interior minister said forensic work was needed to establish a “definitive picture.”3 The FBI has said it is aware of the allegations and may support Philippine authorities.3
Meghan said she was “deeply distressed” and that her thoughts were with “any children who may have been harmed,” framing her decision to bar contact with her children as protective rather than the result of the previously publicised dispute around her 2018 wedding.4 Thomas Markle Sr has denied possessing abusive images or having sexual contact with anyone under 18.4
The common ground in the coverage is that no conclusion has been reached. The central contrast is between Meghan’s account of acting on serious warnings, Markle Sr’s categorical denial, and authorities’ insistence that the evidence must now be tested.
