Binance Moves to Contain Suspected Hack as Scale of Losses Drives Alarm
Binance says it is investigating a security incident, freezing funds and promising to cover losses. While the exchange stresses containment, reports focus on the potential record scale of the breach and the pressure it could put on confidence in centralised crypto platforms.
Binance is trying to reassure users after reports of a major security breach, but the exchange’s containment measures have done little to blunt concern over what could become the largest crypto theft on record.
The exchange said a “security incident” had affected about $6.3 billion in assets, with roughly half frozen through cooperation with other platforms. It said it would “cover all losses,” while withdrawals were disabled until the environment was judged secure.1 Binance’s initial review suggested that a compromised engineer’s laptop may have enabled unauthorised withdrawals, though it said the investigation remained under way.1
A second account struck a more cautious note on what is confirmed: Binance had acknowledged a potential security issue, but had not explicitly said funds were stolen. A company spokesperson said, “Rest assured that user funds are completely safe,” as security teams reviewed the available information.2 That stance contrasts with the more definitive language of Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, who said the episode “does look like a hack on Binance.”2
Reports from the right emphasised the apparent magnitude and market consequences. TRM Labs said attackers targeted Binance wallets across 10 blockchains and moved most funds in roughly 20 minutes; it also said features of the attack resembled earlier thefts attributed by US authorities to North Korea.3 Binance has not publicly confirmed an attribution.
Both accounts agree that outside intervention has been central to the response. Circle said it froze more than $800 million tied to the incident, while Tether reported freezing about $1.6 billion.1 But the interpretations diverge: Binance highlights recovery and customer protection, whereas industry observers warn the episode may weaken appetite for crypto and prompt investors to reassess the risks of holding assets on centralised exchanges.3 Bitcoin and other major tokens fell after the alerts.1
