Right-wing says witnesses trace man’s fatal entry into Yorkshire tiger enclosure

Reports and official statements agree that a man entered a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park and later died. Witnesses offer differing accounts of his actions beforehand, while police and the park stress that staff responded rapidly and the tiger was unharmed.

A fatal incident at Yorkshire Wildlife Park has prompted scrutiny of how a man came to enter a tiger enclosure, with eyewitness accounts offering vivid but differing descriptions of his actions before the attack.

Reports broadly agree that the man, believed to have been in his 20s, entered the enclosure containing Altai, an Amur tiger, after leaving a viewing area. One visitor, Del Taylor, said he had asked her to photograph him with the tiger behind him shortly beforehand. “He was completely alone,” she said, adding that he had been “dancing on the bridge overlooking the enclosure.”

Other witnesses described an attempted intervention. One account said a woman tried to pull him back towards the viewing bridge, but he “pulled away from her, climbed down, and jumped about 12ft” into the pen. Accounts differ over what happened once he was inside: some described him kneeling, bowing or making gestures towards the tiger, while another witness said he shouted “No” before the animal attacked.

Police have not endorsed those individual interpretations. South Yorkshire Police said it received reports at 1.35pm that a man had entered the enclosure and that “the tiger subsequently attacked the man, resulting in serious injury.” Despite medical treatment, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The official account also contrasts with online speculation over the animal’s fate. Police said the tiger was uninjured and posed no wider risk to the public, while the park said its emergency procedures were activated immediately. Keepers reportedly used acoustic devices to encourage Altai to retreat before securing him; the park later confirmed he would not be euthanised and said staff affected by the incident would receive specialist support.

The park closed while authorities continued their inquiries, and police urged people not to share footage circulating online.
