Martinez apology ends the row, but not United’s deeper questions

Lisandro Martinez has apologised and been fined after publicly challenging Manchester United’s recruitment, closing the immediate dispute while leaving debate over the squad, leadership and his own future unresolved.

Lisandro Martinez’s public criticism of Manchester United’s recruitment has been formally dealt with, but the episode has sharpened a wider argument over where responsibility lies for the club’s poor run of form.

After the 2-0 Champions League defeat at Atletico Madrid, the Argentina defender said he expected more investment and “more from our technical director,” Jason Wilcox. Reports said some senior players shared concerns about the limited summer business, although Sir Jim Ratcliffe continued to back Wilcox and his position was not thought to be under threat.

Martinez subsequently met the club’s leadership and manager Michael Carrick, was fined and apologised. He said the defeat’s frustration had led him to speak “at a time and place that perhaps were not the right ones.” His later statement struck a more conciliatory note, arguing that United are strongest “when we are all united” and that the focus should return to winning together.

That apology resolves the immediate disciplinary issue, but it does not settle the competing assessments of United’s difficulties. Martinez’s original remarks framed the problem as one of squad building and support for Carrick, while also acknowledging that players must improve. His contract expires at the end of the season, with United holding a one-year option; reports suggest neither the option nor his longer-term future has been decided.

Former captain Roy Keane took a more sceptical view, saying the controversy reflected “chaos” at the club and describing it as “a bit of a circus.” He argued that players should look “in the mirror” before publicly questioning others. Gary Neville similarly said Martinez’s remarks could frustrate team-mates by implying the existing squad was insufficient.

United now face Leeds with the public dispute closed in principle, but with the underlying questions—recruitment, results and dressing-room responsibility—still open.
