Carrick Sees Promise as Chelsea Defeat Deepens United’s Peril

Manchester United’s improved first half at Chelsea gave Michael Carrick grounds for optimism, but missed chances, Lisandro Martínez’s dismissal and a 2-0 loss intensified pressure on the manager. Chelsea’s attack found decisive moments despite an uneven display.

Manchester United left Stamford Bridge with another damaging defeat and a familiar question hanging over Michael Carrick: how much can an improved performance matter when the results keep worsening?

Chelsea won 2-0 through Morgan Rogers’s individual second-half goal and Cole Palmer’s penalty after Lisandro Martínez was sent off. The result extended United’s winless run to nine matches in all competitions and left them close to the relegation zone.

Carrick’s case rests on the opening 45 minutes. United created clear chances, Matheus Cunha had a goal ruled out for a marginal offside, and the manager said his side "should've been up in the first half really." He argued that a poor goal to concede and the penalty then caused the game to "unravel". Bryan Mbeumo similarly said the team’s mentality had been right from the opening minute, while acknowledging that United had missed opportunities to take an early lead.

That assessment is shared in part by reports that described United as the better first-half side. But the more critical view is that promise has repeatedly been erased by poor finishing, defensive lapses and a lack of control when momentum turns. One account argued that Carrick is only one of several problems, pointing to recruitment and the wider condition of the squad rather than presenting a managerial change as a complete remedy.

Martínez’s two bookings became the clearest flashpoint. The defender first lost out as Rogers ran through to score, then conceded the penalty after catching Wesley Fofana in the face. Former official Darren Cann called the sending-off justified, saying Martínez made no attempt to play the ball. Pundits were harsher still, with Ally McCoist calling the challenge "unacceptable" and saying it had let down teammates and staff.

Carrick declined to say he had been let down and said he expected to remain in charge for Tuesday’s match against Roma. Chelsea, meanwhile, took encouragement from their ability to recover after a disjointed first half: Xabi Alonso praised Estêvão Willian’s response to a rare start, while Rogers again supplied the decisive attacking quality.
